Our physical bodies have a divine origin

The following statements correctly suggest that Mormonism is science-friendly:

M. Russell Ballard: "The Lord, over the centuries, has had a hand in inspiring people to invent tools that facilitate the spreading of the gospel. The Church has adopted and embraced those tools, including print, broadcast media, and the Internet." (Ensign, July 2008.)

Dallin H. Oaks: "The use of medical science is not at odds with our prayers of faith and our reliance on priesthood blessings." (Ensign, May 2010.)

However, not all science is embraced by Mormonism. The science of human evolution, for example, has been repeatedly repudiated and never endorsed in official Church media by members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve.

Here are two current examples:

In the October 2013 General Conference, D. Todd Christofferson testified that "our physical bodies have a divine origin." (Ensign, Nov. 2013.) This declaration expands on his earlier warning about those "who believe that our bodies are ... the result of evolutionary chance." (Ensign, Nov. 2010.)

Christofferson's declaration also affirms remarks about man's origin by Russell M. Nelson in a current Church video, "The Creation." As you view the video, note especially these words, "I testify that the earth and all life upon it are of divine origin. The Creation did not happen by chance."

Joseph Fielding Smith in 2014

Authoritative teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are sent forth by the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles in official Church publications. Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Fielding Smith is just such a publication. Rumors about President Smith that call into question teachings found in this manual are clearly unauthorized and should be rejected outright as false.

The following excerpts from the 2014 Joseph Fielding Smith manual will be of interest to those who have concerns about President Smith's teachings regarding theories of men that disagree with the teachings of God's authorized servants, and this includes scientific theories about death on this earth before the fall of Adam.

This manual is an official gospel reference book:

"The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have established the Teachings of Presidents of the Church series to help you draw closer to your Heavenly Father and deepen your understanding of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. As the Church adds volumes to this series, you will build a collection of gospel reference books for your home. The volumes in this series are designed to be used for personal study and for Sunday instruction. They can also help you prepare other lessons or talks and answer questions about Church doctrine."

Chapter 2: Our Savior, Jesus Christ

"We believe with perfect surety that Christ came to ransom men from the temporal and spiritual death brought into the world by the fall of Adam and that he took upon himself the sins of all men on condition of repentance."

Chapter 3: The Plan of Salvation

"The plan of salvation, or code of laws, which is known as the gospel of Jesus Christ, was adopted in the heavens, before the foundation of the world was laid. It was appointed there that Adam our father should come to this earth and stand at the head of the whole human family. It was a part of this great plan, that he should partake of the forbidden fruit and fall, thus bringing suffering and death into the world, even for the ultimate good of his children.

"The Fall was an essential part of man’s mortal probation.... Had Adam and Eve not partaken, the great gift of mortality would not have come to them. Moreover, they would have had no posterity, and the great commandment given to them by the Lord would not have been fulfilled.

"The fall of Adam brought to pass all of the vicissitudes of mortality. It brought pain, it brought sorrow, it brought death; but we must not lose sight of the fact that it brought blessings also.... It brought the blessing of knowledge and understanding and mortal life."

Chapter 4: Strengthening and Preserving the Family

"Marriage, we have learned, is an eternal principle ordained before the foundation of the world and instituted on this earth before death came into it. Our first parents were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth. It naturally follows that the family organization was also intended to be eternal."

Chapter 5: Faith and Repentance

"Let it be uppermost in your minds, now and at all times, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to lay down his life that we might live. That is the truth, and is fundamental. Upon that our faith is built. It can not be destroyed. We must adhere to this teaching in spite of the teachings of the world, and the notions of men; for this is paramount, this is essential to our salvation. The Lord redeemed us with his blood, he gave us salvation, provided—and there is this condition which we must not forget—that we will keep his commandments, and always remember him. If we will do that then we shall be saved, while the ideas and the foolishness of men, shall perish from the earth."

Chapter 10: Our Search for Truth

"So far as the philosophy and wisdom of the world are concerned, they mean nothing unless they conform to the revealed word of God. Any doctrine, whether it comes in the name of religion, science, philosophy, or whatever it may be, if it is in conflict with the revealed word of the Lord, will fail. It may appear plausible. It may be put before you in language that appeals and which you may not be able to answer. It may appear to be established by evidence that you cannot controvert, but all you need to do is to abide your time. Time will level all things. You will find that every doctrine, every principle, no matter how universally believed, if it is not in accord with the divine word of the Lord to his servants, will perish. Nor is it necessary for us to try to stretch the word of the Lord in a vain attempt to make it conform to these theories and teachings. The word of the Lord shall not pass away unfulfilled, but these false doctrines and theories will all fail. Truth, and only truth, will remain when all else has perished."

Chapter 21: Proclaiming the Gospel to the World

"As agents of the Lord we are not called or authorized to teach the philosophies of the world or the speculative theories of our scientific age. Our mission is to preach the doctrines of salvation in plainness and simplicity as they are revealed and recorded in the scriptures."

Chapter 24: The Work of Latter-day Saint Women: "Unselfish Devotion to This Glorious Cause"

"Every woman baptized into the Church has the hands of the elders laid on her head for the gift of the Holy Ghost that she may have the guidance of that Spirit in all truth. It is the will of the Lord that none may be without divine guidance which will reveal to them the truth and enable them to discern the light from the darkness and, thus, be fortified and given power to resist all false doctrines, theories, and notions, which are so prevalent in the world today."
